Chelva retains today in its urban center the imprint left by the peoples that inhabit throughout history. In this way we can delight in recording the Arab neighborhood of Benacacira, which keeps the hidden, mysterious and recoverable air that this culture confers to its spaces, the Jewish reserved neighborhood of the Azoque, with its dead-end streets, the Morisco area of the Arrabal and the neighborhood Christian of Ollerias. Its narrow streets, the murmur of the water of its countless fountains and traditional laundries, its whitewashed houses, evoke the medieval city that one day was built on a rock and surrounded by murals to protect its defense.
Places of interest:
It is obligatory to walk through its streets, admire the tiles of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and visit the square that occupied the souk and the Muslim mosque, on which from the fourteenth century the chapel of St. George was erected and, at the beginning of s. XVIII, the current hermitage of Soledad. The Jewish Quarter of the Azoque, intact in its original layout, with narrow streets and access porches, a space closed to the outside world that retains its homogeneity and evokes the unity of the Jewish people. Arrabal or Barrio Morisco, moves the same concept of a Muslim city, creating a populous neighborhood outside the walls where Moriscos and newly arrived Christians settled. In its bosom the Mosque of Benaeça was erected, later hermitage of Sta. Cruz In the s. XVII the hermitage of the Desamparados, according to the chronicles, are told on the site of the house of a "desamparado", a Moorish executed for having killed the Viscount in love with a vassal arab.
