Chelva: water, light and fusion of cultures

It is obligatory to walk through its streets, admire the tiles of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and visit the square that occupied the souk and the Muslim mosque, on which from the fourteenth century the chapel of St. George was erected and, at the beginning of s. XVIII, the current hermitage of Soledad. The Jewish Quarter of the Azoque, intact in its original layout, with narrow streets and access porches, a space closed to the outside world that retains its homogeneity and evokes the unity of the Jewish people. Arrabal or Barrio Morisco, moves the same concept of a Muslim city, creating a populous neighborhood outside the walls where Moriscos and newly arrived Christians settled. In its bosom the Mosque of Benaeça was erected, later hermitage of Sta. Cruz In the s. XVII the hermitage of the Desamparados, according to the chronicles, are told on the site of the house of a "desamparado", a Moorish executed for having killed the Viscount in love with a vassal arab.
The Water Route
The "Water Route" is a tourist itinerary with a circular layout, which combines nature and culture in a pleasant walk of approximately two hours. It starts in the Plaza Mayor, guided by signs and information panels that facilitate your journey. The itinerary, which runs through the four historic neighborhoods of the town and through unique sites of the Chelva River, is an easy route that makes it ideal for family outings.
